I think you pitched it just right. There had been some speculation in advance of the event, and the name had leaked, but the amazing part was the interface and how it worked in real life. The demo of Jobs making/receiving the call and the keyboard use brought it to life. I picked one up in California in July and unlocked it for use in Ireland as I knew it was a product I had to try. FYI some journalists in Ireland completely missed the significance and dismissed the iPhone compared to Blackberry and Nokia.
