This statement implies all Americans are involved the shenanigans of dodgy US tech CEOs. They're not. As a journalist gou know America has some of the best and most honest reporting in the world. And as a former IT reporter you know there are many in that industry who have strong ethics and morals. Yes the tech giants have issues but we're not forced to use them. There are alternatives..

Well done Rory. The issue of managing and controlling data as we move from quill pen to digital storage, social media, the cloud and now AI in a shrinking world is becoming more serious every day. Opportunistic people supported by those with vested interests are taking advantage of gaps in the law which has not caught up with technological capability. One could argue that these people should be commended for seeing opportunities, and it is the laws which should be attracting our attention.

In AI, does training data come under privacy laws, copyright, digital rights etc. can it be shared across AI's, are the results of analytics bound by the same controls as the training data used, can the training data used for one purpose be used for other purposes without further approval?

Technology seems to be racing ahead of control. Rory cites the perpetrators, but if we don't have the tools, how can we stop them?

Frightening indeed. Democracy as we know it is being "reshaped", in much the same way that history is written by the victors...

The AGI point is interesting. For many years I have thought that AI has been massively over-hyped and overvalued (and I can say this as a person who has two degrees in Computer Science and has worked in the field). But I do believe we are getting closer to building AGI and I think, for once, this really is a game changer.

Previously AI has transformed niche applications such as face recognition on our smartphones but has not had the major impact on jobs and society predicted by many. But when we create “general” AI that we can point at any problem, then this really could be transformational. In parallel, robot technology like Tesla’s Optimus is improving rapidly. There are many possible benefits of this new technology but also some serious risks. I think the next couple of decades could be a very exciting time… that said, the likes of Palantir do indeed still look overvalued!

I think you would enjoy the book "Careless People" Rory :-)

It shocked me how little the people in the book cared about the people their technology was harming, and how brazenly they lied about the harm. (They definitely knew about the harm.)

These hurty words?

“Mass deportation now, set fire to all the fucking hotels full of the bastards for all I care … If that makes me racist, so be it.”

And she pleaded guilty.

Can you really not appreciate the difference between 'offensive' and 'inciting racial hatred '? Shortly after she posted this, rioters did set fire to a hotel, with women and children inside. But hey, you're in a country run by gangsters. Where armed 'cops' can drag anyone off the street and deport them without due process. So, maybe focus on your own backyard before bothering us.
